Applies to SFI26 agreements in England. SFI26 is closed for applications; this explains the offer as published.
Short answer
Grassland and livestock farms can use SFI26 actions for very low-input grassland (CLIG3, £151 per hectare), herbal leys and legumes in grass. Others pay for grass buffer strips, field corners, winter bird food, taking stock off in autumn and winter, native breeds and moorland grazing. Some are supplements. They only pay alongside a base action in the same application.
Which SFI26 actions suit grassland and livestock farms?
Each SFI26 action lists the land types it can go on. The tables below cover actions whose GOV.UK page lists grassland or moorland as eligible. Rates are yearly, from Annex A of the SFI26 scheme rules (opens in a new tab). The details come from each action's page in the SFI26 actions (print version) (opens in a new tab).
The scheme rules define the grassland types. Temporary grassland is usually part of an arable rotation and has been grass for less than 5 years in a row. Permanent grassland has grown grass for 5 years or more outside an arable rotation. It is split into improved, semi-improved, unimproved and species-rich types (section 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab)).
Lowland grassland
| Code | Action | Rate | Static or rotational | Where (from the action page) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLIG3 | Manage grassland with very low nutrient inputs | £151 per hectare | Static | Temporary grassland, and improved and low input permanent grassland |
| CSAM3 | Herbal leys | £224 per hectare | Rotational or static | Arable land, fallow, temporary grassland and improved permanent grassland |
| CNUM2 | Legumes on improved grassland | £102 per hectare | Rotational or static | Temporary grassland and improved permanent grassland |
| CIGL1 | Take grassland field corners or blocks out of management | £333 per hectare | Static | Temporary grassland and improved permanent grassland |
| CIGL2 | Winter bird food on improved grassland | £515 per hectare | Rotational or static | Temporary grassland and improved permanent grassland |
| CIGL3 | 4m to 12m grass buffer strip on improved grassland | £235 per hectare | Static | Temporary grassland and improved permanent grassland |
| WBD6 | Remove livestock from intensive grassland during the autumn and winter (outside SDAs) | £115 per hectare | Static | Outside severely disadvantaged areas (SDAs): temporary grassland and improved and low input permanent grassland |
| WBD7 | Remove livestock from grassland during the autumn and winter (SDAs) | £115 per hectare | Static | Inside SDAs: improved and low input permanent grassland |
| GRH12 | Manage rough grassland for upland breeding waders | £203 per hectare | Static | Permanent grassland in a less favoured area (LFA), below the moorland line |
| HEF6 | Manage historic and archaeological features on grassland | £55 per hectare | Static | Permanent grassland with a historic or archaeological feature on your SFI HEFER (Historic England record) |
CIGL1 and CIGL2 are limited-area actions. Together with other limited-area actions, they can cover no more than 25% of your farm's agricultural area (scheme rules, section 4.5 (opens in a new tab)).
Supplements for grassland and grazing
| Code | Supplement | Rate | Base actions it goes with |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRH7 | Haymaking | £157 per hectare | CLIG3 |
| GRH8 | Haymaking (late cut) | £187 per hectare | CLIG3 |
| GRH10 | Lenient grazing | £28 per hectare | CLIG3 |
| SPM3 | Keep native breeds on grazed habitats (more than 80%) | £146 per hectare | AGF1, AGF2, CLIG3, OFC1, OFC2, OFM1 or OFM2 |
| SPM5 | Keep native breeds on extensively managed habitats (more than 80%) | £11 per hectare | AGF1, AGF2, UPL1, UPL2, UPL3, UPL8, UPL10, SCR2 or OFM3 |
Moorland
| Code | Action | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| UPL1 | Moderate livestock grazing on moorland | £35 per hectare |
| UPL2 | Low livestock grazing on moorland | £89 per hectare |
| UPL3 | Limited livestock grazing on moorland | £111 per hectare |
| UPL5 | Supplement: Keep cattle and ponies on moorland (minimum 70% GLU) | £18 per hectare |
| UPL6 | Supplement: Keep cattle and ponies on moorland (100% GLU) | £23 per hectare |
| UPL8 | Shepherding livestock on moorland (remove stock for at least 4 months) | £74 per hectare |
| UPL10 | Shepherding livestock on moorland (remove stock for at least 8 months) | £102 per hectare |
UPL5 and UPL6 only go with UPL1, UPL2 or UPL3. You can't have both on the same area (SFI26 actions (opens in a new tab)). Much moorland is common land or shared grazing. You could not apply for SFI26 on common land (scheme rules, sections 3.1 and 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab)).
What does CLIG3 low-input grassland ask you to do?
CLIG3 pays £151 per hectare to keep manure and fertiliser very low. In short, the action page (opens in a new tab) says you must:
- apply no more than 12 tonnes per hectare of cattle farmyard manure, or the same amount of available nutrients as fertiliser or other organic manures;
- graze or cut the grassland. Keep bare ground to a minimum and keep the grass cover whole, with no compaction or poaching;
- not plough, cultivate or re-seed it, carry out drainage works, or apply digestate or other industrial by-products;
- not apply pesticides, except herbicides to weed wipe or spot treat injurious weeds, invasive non-native species, nettles or bracken;
- if you take a forage cut, first leave the grass ungrazed and uncut for at least 7 weeks in spring and summer. Leave an uncut margin.
Read the full action page before you rely on this summary. SSSI land (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) needs Natural England's consent before you do the action.
What records does taking stock off in winter need?
WBD6 asks you to take all livestock off the land for at least 5 months in a row in autumn and winter. That is usually between October and March. You must keep a written record of grazing on each field in the action. You must also keep input records. They must show the grassland has had at least 100kg of nitrogen per hectare per year (SFI26 actions (opens in a new tab)).
What evidence should a grassland farm keep?
Every action asks you to keep evidence such as "field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices" and "photographs or other documentation" (SFI26 actions (opens in a new tab)). For grassland, that usually means grazing records by field, manure and fertiliser records, seed invoices for leys and legumes, and dated photos of the grass. Keep it all for at least 7 years after the agreement ends (scheme rules, section 12.4 (opens in a new tab)).
Common questions
Can I graze a grass buffer strip on improved grassland?
Yes, for CIGL3. The action page says you can graze it with livestock. But the grass cover must stay whole all year, with no tracks, compacted areas or poaching. You must not cut it for hay or silage.
Can I claim the haymaking supplement on its own?
No. GRH7 and GRH8 are supplements. You can only apply for them in the same SFI26 application as base action CLIG3.
Does SFI26 pay for a grassland or livestock plan?
No. SFI26 has no plan actions and no management payment.
Can I use SFI26 on common land?
No. The SFI26 scheme rules say you cannot apply for an SFI26 agreement on common land, including shared grazing.
